Platinum Jubilee celebrations

Representatives of a range of community groups including the Henderson Hall Committee, Community Council, WI, Film Night, Woodland Group, Gardening Club and the Show Committee have come together and joined forces with a wide range of other volunteers to organise a range of community-based events and initiatives in celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

A series of events and initiatives are outlined below will take place over the summer for residents of Taybont on Usk Community Council area. i.e. Pencelli, Scethrog, Aber, Talybont and Usk and Llandetty. The celebrations have a focus on environmental sustainability. In addition to the social events, oak trees will be planted in the village including one adjacent to a commemorative oak tree planted in Talybont village in 1952 to mark the Queen’s coronation. Cui Parc are donating land for a Jubilee Wood and in November, residents will be invited to join in with the planting of the trees. A commemorative bench will be placed on the canal bank between Pencelli and Talybont. Residents are invited to collect free red, white and blue petunias to grow in hanging baskets, planters and gardens.

Volunteers made an incredible 60 metres of bunting on 14 May!!!

This will be decorated by children on 2 June….

We have also have the most beautiful hand-knitted bunting made by the very talented resident of Talybont on Usk Mrs Jean Lawrence

If you are making bunting at home for our celebration events just bring it along to any of our events.


To add a floral touch to our jubilee celebrations and to help the local bees, residents of the Talybont on Usk Community Council area collected FREE red, white and blue, petunia plugs for hanging baskets and gardens this summer.


Free admittance to all Talybont community area residents to a feel good launch the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations. Warm up your voices and dust off your dance moves for the sing-along version of Mama Mia. Doors open at 5.40pm with the film starting at 6pm.

Free nibbles will be available but feel free bring along drinks to keep your vocal chords nicely lubricated!!

Fancy dress is of course optional should you feel inclined to tap into your inner Abba but of course that is entirely up to you……

N.B. The film is classified as a PG so not suitable for very young children.


Children living in the area of Pencelli, Scethrog, Talybont on Usk and Llandetty aged 2 to 11 years are invited to free craft sessions at the Hall to decorate the bunting made on 14th May and make crowns, sashes, medals and flags in preparation for the 5th June. There will be two sessions: 10-12pm and 2-4pm. Refreshments will be provided, and parents are encouraged to stay and help! No booking required, just turn up on the day.

In addition, Jayne Gold of Stomping Space will also run free outdoor environmental workshops from 9-10am, 1-2pm, and 4-5pm. Activities will include creating a ‘wishing tree’, creating tree clay faces with natural materials and journey/wind sticks. Places are limited to 12 participants per session and will need to be booked in advance through visiting

You are invited to bring a picnic to the Henderson Hall playing fields from 12.30pm and enjoy an afternoon and evening of entertainment including music and games.

We also invite you to bring a cake to contribute to Afternoon tea that will be served by Talybont on Usk Women’s Institute from 3.30 pm to 5pm

Music from the last 70 years will be played from 12.15pm and will go on in to the night…

Tables and chairs will be available for people who want to use them for their picnic and Afternoon Tea

The day will end with a Social Evening in Henderson Hall where a bar will be available.

Of course we are planning for the weather to be perfect! If the forecast is unfavourable we hold the picnic in Henderson Hall and the Taiko drumming performance will take place on the hall stage.

N.B. our original plans included a flotilla of boats travelling from Pencelli to Talybont on Usk however insurance costs and logistical problems have meant we have been unable to progress these plans. We are instead, focusing on entertainment and activities on 5 June in at Henderson Hall and the playing fields. We hope to bring people together from across generations in a way that simply hasn’t been achievable for two years.
